English 1302 Week 6

This week in English class we acted out and read from act 1 and act 2 of The Tempest by Shakespeare. I learned that in plays by Shakespeare, there are a lot of words that are of a very intellectual vocabulary, which makes it hard to read some of the time. Also, most of the conversations that the characters have with each other I learned are very well thought over and would have taken me a good 30 minutes to sound as smart as they did.

On lines 104-116 in The Tempest, on page 40, act 2, there is a piece of rhetoric in a conversation between Sebastian, Alonso, and Gonzalo. Sebastian talks to Alonso and says that he should have backed out of his marriage because it only made things worse for the situation he was in. Then Gonzalo came in and told Sebastian that what he was saying was indeed true, but he shouldn’t say it anyway because it’s hurting Alonso even more. Then Sebastian listened to Gonzalo and stopped, so Gonzalo convinced Sebastian to stop talking and hurting Alonso even more than he already is hurting.

This week I used a rhetoric method when I was talking to my friend about which automotive company was better for trucks. I said Chevrolet was better and he said Ford was better, it turned into an argument and I was trying to convince him that Chevrolet was better. My argument that I used was that Chevrolet was better because their truck motors can put out a lot more horsepower than the Ford motors can put out.
